Thermodynamic and Kinetic Factors Governing the Response of Aerosol to Relative Humidity
Dienstag, 19. Juni 2012, 15:00
KIT, IMK-AAF, Campus Nord, Geb.435, Raum 2.05
Understanding the response of atmospheric aerosol to changes in relative humidity is critical for quantifying their impact on climate, for predicting rates and mechanisms of heterogeneous reactive processing, and for assessing their impact on human health through inhalation to the respiratory tract. In this talk, I will describe some of the methods available using single particles to investigate the thermodynamic and kinetic factors regulating water partitioning and transport between the gas and condensed aerosol phases. In particular, we will explore the bulk, surface and gas phase limitations imposed on transport in glassy, amorphous and solution phase aerosol using optical tweezers, electrodynamic balances and Bessel beams.
