Weather and climate in mountainous regions are strongly influenced by
thermally driven winds. They control the exchange of heat, moisture,
momentum and pollutants between the valley and the free atmosphere.
As a result of valley and slope winds, the magnitude of the net vertical flux of
various physical quantities can be several times the net flux over flat terrain.
In order to quantify this difference between flat and complex terrain we
conducted a comprehensive series of high resolution numerical simulations
for various different idealized valley shapes and magnitudes of
surface heat fluxes.
The talk will summarize the current state of this research project and will show
future perspectives.
