High-resolution imaging in warm clouds with the Max Planck CloudKite
Colloquium
Campus Nord, Gebäude 435, Seminarraum 2.05
Dr. Mohsen Bagheri, Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization

The growth, lifetime, number density, and size of water droplets in warm atmospheric clouds determine the evolution, lifetime and light transmission properties of those clouds. These small-scale cloud properties, in addition to precipitation initiation, have strong implications for the Earth's energy budget since warm clouds cover large geographic areas. To understand these small scale processes, we have devloped the Max Planck CloudKite to measure cloud micropshyics and turbuelnce at high spatial/temporal resolutions. This is achieved by perfoming airborne high-speed holography and particle image velocimetry inside clouds. In this talk, I will introduce the CloudKite platform and present the imaging measurements within shallow cumulus clouds over the Atlantic near Barbados. Our observations reveal strong local droplet clustering on sub-meter scales, challenging long-held assumptions about cloud microphysics and carrying important implications for weather and climate modelling.

Wednesday, 19 March 2025
10:00 - 11:00
4. Coffee Lecture
Coffee Lecture
Campus Nord, Gebäude 435, Seminarroom 2.05
Florian Obersteiner , KIT

presentation about  Python version and package management with the uv tool; with the motivation that reproducible data requires reproducible software.
This is kind of a prequel to the IMK Python group meetings which will start again in that same week (and might get a more seminar-like character). So, if you know a little bit about dependency hell in Python, or are just starting out, this might be for you.
Grab a coffee/tea and listen in the seminar room 2.05 at CN or online (reminder with Zoom link will be sent a few days before the event).
We look forward to seeing you there!

Best regards,
IMK data managers
